Rick Stewart is an experienced sculptor who has a strong background in clay and ceramics. He worked at RDG Dahlquist Clayworks in Des Moines, a design and fabrication ceramic studio. There he created tile work, sculpture, and pottery as well as worked on large-scale architectural commissions. He is especially proud of the group of life-size sculptures of acclaimed Iowa athletes created for Des Moines' Iowa Hall of Pride. He also played a crucial role as assistant to sculptor Herman Deaton on the real-sized horse sculpture "Old Paint in Paradise."
Art education is another passion of Stewart's. He believes art should be accessible, and has dedicated many years to sharing his talent with students of all ages. This dovetails with his greater goal of sharing his creative knowledge with as many people as he can, and he is more than happy to share it with anyone who asks for help.
At Drake University, he taught evening classes on ceramics for years. During the 2019-20 school year, he participated as an artist-in-residence at B.C. Berg Middle School and worked with Berg Elementary students in 20 to create the "Digging Newton" tile installation mounted on the west side of Forbes building on 2nd Street.
Stewart is fully immersed in the CAA environment, both as a board member and as an instructor. He also serves on the boards of both the ISF and CAA. He lives in Newton with his wife, Theresa. They have two grown children and three grandchildren.
