There's not a day, or possibly even a moment, that goes by without Laura Lengeling thinking about painting. As a visual artist working in oils and soft pastels, she is always searching for inspiration. The clouds at sunset. Or the way a single barn light casts its glow across a farmyard. With her smart phone and a sketchbook constantly at hand, she is never at a loss for subject matter.

When it comes to her studio work, it’s not unusual for Lengeling to have as many as three works going at once, not including several sketches in the problem-solving phase. Having more than one piece in process at a time helps her to keep a fresh eye.

Painting for Lengeling is about capturing a mood, a fleeting moment. Then bringing that from time and place onto a surface. Light and shadow are integral to her work.. Light highlights the subject and creates interest, while shadows contrast and help develop space and depth. These elements mesh and create something ephemeral..

Lengeling loves painting outside en plein air as she develops works inspired from her Midwest surroundings and experiences. This time spent outdoors greatly informs her studio work — a place where she also enjoys working. In studio, she has two large gallery walls stocked with a constant flow of finished art transitioning out to professional shows and galleries. In addition to being an artist, Lengeling loves giving clients a tour of her studio and when asked, she enjoys sharing thoughts on her creative processes and how she works.
